Lewis the Lion learns about Capoeira at a Brazilian School

Lewis the Lion was keen to go to a meet children in a Brazilian school and so was most impressed when he visited the British School in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.

Here he met children who were learning a most impressive martial art called capoeira.

When capoeira is done well it can almost look balletic and it has developed particularly in Brazil because it was brought over by the slaves from its sister-country Angola many years ago. Originally it was part of a ritual but nowadays, it takes the form of two fighters/dancers who leap and swirl around each other in combat. It takes years of practice to develop this art form as much of it is about anticipating your opponents move correctly!

Capoeira

This website has a video clip which shows how little children in Brazil start to learn Capoeira.

Would you like to learn Capoeira? Do you think it’s important to learn a martial art? Why or why not?

Gracias, Jude. Am now in a town in the middle of Argentina, Neuquén, where there’s nothing to do except tomorrow morning I’m going on the hunt for dinosaur fossils 90 km away (with Lewis of course!), thanks to one of the children that inspired me on this blog! Apart from that hopefully will get a chance to post a few more blogs as know that I’m way behind schedule! I wish you were all here with me too. Take care and love to all. Helen (and Lewis of course!) xxx
